1098-T Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why didn't I receive a 1098-T form? Cornell does not issue a 1098-T if financial aid equals or exceeds tuition charges, if the student is a nonresident alien, or if the student is enrolled in not-for-credit courses.
2. What is a 1098-T? A 1098-T is a statement sent to students and to the IRS of tuition billed, and of scholarships and grants issued. It is used by taxpayers who claim either the Hope tax credit or the Lifetime Learning tax credit.
3. What are the Hope and Lifetime Learning tax credits? These credits are explained in IRS Publication 970 on "Tax Benefits for Higher Education."
4. How can I obtain the financial information required for the credits? You should review your bursar bills and/or other documents in your possession. If you need copies of your bills, you may obtain them in one of the following ways:
5. I received a 1098-T from Cornell; does that mean I am eligible for a credit? Not necessarily. There are many restrictions associated with the tax credits. Review IRS forms, instructions, and publications for guidance.
6. I am a foreign student; can I claim a credit? Generally, foreign students cannot claim a credit. However, some foreign students may be eligible. Review IRS forms, instructions, and publications for guidance.
7. Why is there no check mark in box 8 ("at least part-time")? Box 8 will not be checked if you did not complete six credit hours during an academic period and/or you were a graduate student in absentia.
8. I took a graduate level course; why is there no check mark in box 9 ("graduate student")? Box 9 will not be checked if you were not enrolled in a graduate degree program or you were enrolled during the calendar year first as an undergraduate student and then a graduate student.
9. How do I get a copy of my 1098-T? You may view and or print a copy of your 1098-T at any time by going to www.bursar.cornell.edu/Tax_Information.cfm and choosing the "1098-T" tab.
