1098-E Frequently Asked Questions

1.  What is a 1098-E?
A 1098-E is a "Student Loan Interest Statement" issued to the IRS and to student loan recipients to report student loan interest paid to the lender throughout the year. Note: Review the information from IRS to determine if you are eligible for a deduction.

2.  Where can I obtain additional information about eligibility for the deduction?
See the "Student Loan Interest Deduction Worksheet" that accompanies your 1040 or 1040-A forms, as well as IRS Publication 970  on "Tax Benefits for Higher Education."

3.  Why did I receive a 1098-E from Cornell?
Cornell issues a 1098-E to all student loan recipients who paid interest to Cornell on a student loan.

4.  I did not receive a 1098-E. What office do I contact?
Send an e-mail to uco-loans@cornell.edu  and provide your name, Cornell ID number and mailing address.
